He raced with number 48.
There were no real protective gears, it was 1971 — and of course, he entered the race under a fake name.
He was Steve McQueen, known for signing up for motorcycle and car races as “HARVEY MUSHMAN” — a made-up name to keep things low-key, stay away from pushy fans, and race without too much interference.
Steve McQueen always put his love for engines first. He filmed legendary documentaries and movies about the racing world — on two wheels and four.
Making a T-shirt with “McQueen” slapped across it? That would’ve been too easy — and definitely not our style.
Back then, racing T-shirts were designed by the mechanics themselves. They were raw, simple, and absolutely beautiful.
That’s exactly how we imagined and printed ours — inspired by that legendary 1971 Grand Prix, where “Harvey Mushman” made it into the Top Ten with a foot fractured in six places.
It had to be told — and told on one of our T-shirts.
